Magnets capture the imagination. From ancient discoveries to modern medical breakthroughs, they’ve shaped innovation for thousands of years. Today, magnets power everything from MRI machines to the headphones on your desk—and yes, they keep that favorite photo on your fridge.
At CarStickers.com, we bring this timeless science into everyday life with custom magnets—personalized, practical, and made to stick around. Before we dive into creative uses, here’s a quick tour through magnet history.
A brief history of magnets

In 600 BCE, Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus wrote about “Magnesian rock,” now known as lodestone—a naturally magnetic mineral that attracts iron.
By 1000 CE in China, magnetized iron bars floated in bowls of water reliably aligned north–south, forming the first compasses and transforming navigation. In 1269, Petrus Peregrinus de Maricourt described magnetic poles (“opposites attract, likes repel”), and in 1600, William Gilbert published De Magnete, among the first systematic studies of magnetism.
From guiding sailors to powering technology, magnets have been a constant in human progress.
What exactly is a magnet?

“A magnet is an object which produces a magnetic field," according to Science Museum in London.
Magnets have a north and south pole, with field lines stretching from north to south. They attract certain materials and can repel or attract other magnets. There are two main types:
- Permanent magnets—always “on” (think fridge magnets).
- Electromagnets—activated by electricity (motors, MRI scanners).
Fun fact: the Earth itself is a giant magnet—its mostly iron core creates the field that gives us magnetic poles.
How magnets are used today

- Electronics: Speakers, headphones, and TVs use magnets to turn energy into sound.
- Everyday life: Cabinet latches, cordless tool motors, and magnetic stripes on credit cards.
- Industry: Recycling cranes lift scrap with electromagnets; food processors remove metal fragments for safety.
- Healthcare:MRI machines use incredibly strong magnets to capture detailed scans.
- Navigation & robotics: From early compasses to today’s drones and robots, magnets guide and enable motion.
It’s hard to imagine a modern world without them.
The fun side: custom magnets
