The Do’s & Don’ts of Waterproof Stickers

Make Sure Your Stickers Last — Rain or Shine

Waterproof doesn’t always mean bulletproof. If you’re using stickers for outdoor branding, drinkware, sports equipment, or gear that goes through a bit of wear and tear, you need to know what makes a sticker truly waterproof. This guide will help you understand the science behind it, avoid common mistakes, and get the most out of your designs.

What Exactly Makes a Sticker Waterproof?

  • Materials Matter: Standard white vinyl is generally considered waterproof. Unlike paper-based options, vinyl holds up in moisture-rich environments. Not all stickers on our site are made with standard white vinyl. If you choose a wood sticker for example it will be made with our premium real wood veneer which is not waterproof.
  • Waterproof Inks: These include solvent, eco-solvent, latex, or UV-curable inks that won’t run when wet. Here at Car Stickers we use eco-solvent inks on custom printed stickers.
  • Protective Laminate: There are a variety of protective coatings out there to choose from. Some places use a spray varnish others use a layer of protective laminate. Here at Carstickers we use a layer or protective laminate rather than a spray. A clear laminate (either gloss or matte) seals the sticker, preventing water from reaching the ink layer and adding scratch resistance.
  • Waterproof ≠ Dishwasher-safe: Even waterproof stickers can degrade under high heat, steam, and detergents. While they may last in the dish washer for a period of time depending on the size and object it is adhered to, we recommend hand washing any items that have a sticker rather than using the dishwasher.

The Do’s

  • DO choose vinyl if you need durability.  Our standard white vinyl is air egress which means that it is easy to release the air bubbles when applying the stickers. This is a huge benefit for large stickers that are being adhered to vehicles, doors or windows. Additionally, it is flexible - making it perfect for curved surfaces like water bottles, skateboards, helmets, laptops, or car bumpers.
  • DO order lamination for added protection. Here at Carstickers you don't have to worry because we ALWAYS offer free lamination for our standard white vinyl stickers. You even get the choice between gloss or matte finish. The lamination helps prevent fading, scratching, and ink lift when exposed to the elements.
  • DO apply stickers to clean, dry, smooth surfaces. Dust, texture, or oils can cause the adhesive to fail. Check out our application instructions for additional tips and tricks for applying different styles and sizes of stickers.
  • DO cure them properly. Let stickers rest 24–48 hours after application, especially on cups or bottles, so the adhesive fully bonds.
  • DO test before bulk ordering.  Always test a sample if you’re unsure how the material will perform on your specific surface. You can reach out to our customer service team via email or phone to inquire about samples of any material we offer.

The Don’ts

  • DON’T assume "waterproof" = dishwasher safe. Even laminated vinyl stickers can peel or fade in hot cycles or with harsh soap. Not all vinyl stickers are created the same. Some suppliers use spray varnish, some don't laminate, some use PET or BOPP instead of vinyl. All of these things affect the longevity and durability of your stickers. Make sure to look into the material type and lamination offered before ordering.
  • DON’T use paper stickers where moisture is likely. They’ll warp, wrinkle, and tear in wet conditions. Paper stickers are generally considered a good option for something indoors. They are cheaper to order and do not last as long. The ink tends to fade quicker as well.
  • DON’T apply on wet, dusty, or uneven surfaces. This creates weak points where water can seep in or the sticker can peel. Be careful when you are applying large scale stickers too.
  • DON’T scrub stickers aggressively. Even high-quality waterproof materials can be worn down by repeated abrasion.

"Waterproof" doesn't mean indestructible. Daily dishwashing or saltwater exposure can still shorten a sticker's lifespan. Not all sellers laminate their stickers. Always ask!
