When you order custom die-cut vinyl stickers from CarStickers, you'll notice there are three backing options to choose from before you check out:
- Standard Backing
- Kiss-Cut Backing
- Split (Crack & Peel) Backing
If you're not sure which option is right for your project, don't worry—we'll break down the differences, explain how each one works, and help you decide which backing best fits your needs.
Standard Backing

Standard backing is the classic option for custom die-cut stickers and the most popular choice for everyday use.
A die-cut sticker consists of three layers:
- A backing liner
- Pressure-sensitive adhesive vinyl
- A protective laminate (available in matte or gloss)
Unlike transfer decals, which include transfer tape for installation, die-cut stickers are simple peel-and-stick products that are ready to apply right out of the box.
Years ago, creating custom die-cut stickers required expensive steel dies for every unique shape. Today, digital printing and precision cutting technology have changed that process completely.
At CarStickers, we digitally print and cut every sticker, allowing us to produce virtually any custom shape without tooling fees or die charges.
Our standard vinyl stickers are:
- Weatherproof
- Laminated for scratch and UV protection
- Available in matte or gloss
- Rated for at least five years of outdoor durability
- Flexible enough for curved surfaces like water bottles, helmets, laptops, and vehicle bumpers
Pro Tip
Want to make your stickers work even harder?
Choose printed backing to add another marketing opportunity. Print your logo, business information, social media handles, instructions, coupons, or even another design directly on the liner in full color.
Kiss-Cut Backing

Kiss-cut stickers (sometimes called flex-cut stickers) include extra backing material around your sticker.
Instead of peeling directly from a liner that's the exact shape of the sticker, your design sits inside a larger backing sheet, making it easier to handle and giving you additional space to customize.
Easier to Peel
If your sticker has lots of intricate edges, thin details, or delicate points, a larger backing sheet provides more stability while making the sticker much easier to peel away without bending or damaging it.
Add More Than Just Your Sticker
One of the biggest advantages of kiss-cut backing is the extra printable space surrounding your design.
You can use this area to include:
- Business information
- QR codes
- Barcodes
- Product instructions
- Social media handles
- Promotional artwork
- Additional branding
If you want to design this entire backing sheet yourself, you'll want to order through our dedicated Kiss Cut Stickers product page or upload a fully designed kiss-cut layout rather than selecting kiss-cut backing on the die-cut product page.
Retail-Ready Displays
Kiss-cut stickers are especially popular for retail environments.
Because they include a backing card, they're easier to:
- Add hang holes
- Display on peg hooks
- Organize in sticker racks
- Stack neatly on shelves
The larger backing also helps protect intricate sticker edges from damage caused by customers flipping through merchandise displays.
Split Backing (Crack & Peel)

Our third backing option is Split Backing, also known as Crack & Peel Backing.
This option doesn't change your sticker—it simply changes how easy it is to remove from the liner.
Some vinyl materials naturally shrink slightly over time, making stickers harder to peel from their backing paper. While our premium vinyl is designed to resist noticeable shrinkage for at least five years outdoors, larger stickers or complex shapes can still be more difficult to separate from the liner.
Split backing solves this problem.
The backing paper is cut through the middle while leaving the sticker itself completely intact. You can choose split backing for your stickers when you are finalizing your order.
Simply bend the sticker slightly, separate the split liner, and peel it away in seconds.
When Should You Choose Split Backing?
Split backing is a great option if you're ordering:
- Large stickers or bumper stickers
- Stickers with complex shapes
- Stickers that may sit on retail shelves for long periods
- Promotional stickers that will be handed out to customers
- Stickers where easy application is especially important
Since only the liner is cut, your finished sticker remains exactly the same—it's simply much easier to peel and apply.
Which Backing Option Is Right for You?

| Backing Option | Best For |
|---|---|
| Standard Backing | Everyday custom stickers, laptops, water bottles, vehicles, promotional giveaways |
| Kiss-Cut Backing | Retail displays, artists, Etsy shops, QR codes, barcodes, additional branding |
| Split Backing (Crack & Peel) | Large stickers, intricate designs, bumper stickers, or any sticker that's difficult to peel |
No matter which backing option you choose, you'll receive the same premium vinyl, weatherproof laminate, and vibrant full-color printing. The only difference is how your sticker is presented and how it's applied.
